"With traumatized communities in every corner of the world, we seem to be adopting an international psychology of violence. As fear hardens into hate and loss into hopelessness in millions of hearts, we stare through the new year into a future of protracted violence." Get the full story here. When they were 50 ... It was a very bad yearSo earlier this week Joe Strummer of the Clash died, and then later in the week Herb Ritts died. Both were 50 and very talented individuals. But hey, we've still got Trent Lott, Dick Cheney, George W. ....Going for BrokeIn the rush to war with Iraq and basically make life suck for Americans who aren't rich, conservative, or both, Congress didn't get around to doing anything for the 800,000 people who are going to lose their unemployment benefits this week. Mindful of that money void, ABCNews.com (Your Disney News Network) has provided a relatively worthless article guaranteed to make you bored and maybe even experience a little deja vu. The only noteworthy element of the thing is this stat: "State, local and federal government entities have gained 252,000 workers in the year ending in October." Smaller and smaller government all the time ... In September, ABCnews.com produced a little number apparently meant to uplift your job-hunting spirits, and it began with this: "After working for seven years as a data support engineer for WorldCom, Janie Foydl was laid off in May. Now she scoops up dog poop for a living." Joining Janie in the reinvention department are a Houston outfit that also scoops poop, a guy who advertises for corporations on his forehead, and a guy who cleans up bird poop. All sounds shitty to me ... Music MinuteThis is Pete Ham. He sang for Badfinger. Then he killed himself. It was very tragic, not only because suicide and death are drags, but because sources say he was a gentle soul who did not gorge himself on the bad habits and excesses of rock as did so many of his peers (though we don't hold it against them). I'm putting his picture here as part of my new campaign to post photos of British rock and roll superstars and hopefully spread a little of their karma via this site. If anyone has a favorite British rock and roll superstar who they would like to see on this web site, email me and I will post their picture in an upcoming entry. Photos of superstars who have previously appeared on the front page of this site will be archived on my music page, easily accessible by scrolling up to the top of this page and hitting "music," or simply by clicking here. Very soon the music page will include an expanded list of noted rock and roll superstars, hip hop greats, electronica all-stars and more. The page might even be organized in a neat and conscientious manner, with categories and headings.
